Barberville Falls Information Meeting

The Nature Conservancy has been discussing transferring the Barberville Falls to the Town of Poestenkill.   The Barberville Falls is a notable natural landmark in the Town and carries the waters of the Poesten Kill off the Rensselaer Plateau to the lower elevations of the county.  Many of those who live in Poestenkill and surrounding area have spent time at the falls.

An informational session will be held on May 4, 2017 at the Poestenkill Town Hall, 38 Davis Drive, Poestenkill, NY at 7 PM by the Poestenkill Town Board to offer information on TNC’s offer and for the public to ask questions and offer their suggestions on this potential acquisition.

The property identified for transfer is 138 acres located between Plank RD, Blue Factory Road and Davitt Lake Road.   Only half the falls is owned by TNC while the other half is privately owned.   Several hundred feet of the Poesten Kill runs through the property.  During 2015 and 2016 the Falls Citizen Advisory Committee made several suggestions regarding the acquisition

Community Meeting on Rensselaer Plateau Signage Development

The Towns of Sand Lake, Nassau and Poestenkill have been working with Trampoline Inc., a graphic design and marketing firm, to develop a logo for road signage identifying locations and activities within the Rensselaer Plateau. The Towns received a grant from the New York Hudson River Valley Greenway for the development of the logo and signage design. The Towns on the Plateau will be able to utilize the signage to identify recreational activities or points of interest on the Plateau. The Plateau is asset for our residents and could be of greater economic importance by attracting visitors and new residents. All of the communities on the Plateau are invited and encouraged to utilize the signage and logo. The logo can be replicated on other informational and marketing materials.

A Community Meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 24th at 6:30 PM at Sand Lake Town Hall (8428 NY Route 66, Sand Lake, NY).

The purpose of this community meeting is to present the design of the draft logo to be used on the signage. The Towns are looking for community input on the logo, identification of key sign locations and ideas for uses of the logo beyond road signage.

Saint - Gobain and Poestenkill Water
June 30, 2016

Several residents have contacted me over the past couple of months regarding plant operations at the Saint-Gobain Plant on NY355 and the potential for ground water contamination by PFOA.  Their concern stems from the public water supply problems which have overshadowed the Village of Hoosick Falls' and other area municipal and private water supplies.  In January, I was in contact with management from Saint - Gobain.   The plant in Poestenkill used relatively little material containing PFOA's.  It was unlikely that the plant would have contaminated the local ground water.  Leaving nothing to chance, we did test a well in immediate proximity to the plant.  We tested for the full complement of PFOA's and similar compounds.  No contamination was found.  Our public / municipal water supply comes from Troy so there is no chance of contamination through that source.

If you have any concerns regarding your drinking water, please feel free to call me (Supervisor Dominic Jacangelo 283-5100 ext. 100 or Robert Brunet, the Poestenkill Water Manager at 518-283-5100 ext . 102

IN AN EMERGENCY CAN THE POLICE, FIRE DEPARTMENT OR AMBULANCE FIND YOUR HOME? Poestenkill residents are reminded that all homes must have their street number displayed on the house visible from the road and have the street number posted at the edge of the property so that it readily identifies the home if the structure is more than 75 ft from the street.  Each apartment in a multi family residence must be clearly identified also.  Having emergency responders searching for your home eats up precious time in an emergency. Those lost minutes can be a life saving difference. Reflective compliant numbers may be obtained from the Poestenkill Fire Company.  Recently the lack of a properly identified driveway caused a delay in reaching a person who had dialed 911.  Please be sure that your home is appropriately numbered especially if it is some distance from the road.

Chapter 96 of the Poestenkill Town Code provides specific direction on the posting of numbers and the responsibility of property owners for this numbering.

§ 96-6. Size and display of numbers.

A. The numbers to be displayed on a building shall conform to the requirements of the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code (generally 4 inches in height and in a lit area).
B. The numbers shall not be obstructed by trees, shrubbery, porches or other extensions of the building.
C. Wherever practicable, said number shall be placed near some light or source of illumination so that it may be readily seen at night.
D. If the building upon which the number is to be displayed is more than 75 feet from the edge of the road, street or highway serving the building, the number shall, in addition to the other requirements contained herein and in addition to being displayed on the front of the building itself, be displayed on a sign readily visible from the road, street or highway serving the building and in no event further back than 25 feet from said road, street or highway right-of-way.

Is your house number clearly visible from the street? If not, get your reflective house number sign now. Stop by the station for a form today.

Q: Would you like to see what one looks like in person?

A: We have ours mounted outside our main station. Come see!

Home Security Reminder
August 26, 2013

On Thursday August 22, 2013 the Town Board heard a presentation by State Police Senior Investigator Andrew Crowe and Rensselaer County Under-sheriff Patrick Russo regarding crime trends in Poestenkill and the surrounding communities.  Sadly, heroin use has become a problem in the community at large and it is driving crime in the area.  These crimes have usually been home invasions where the perpetrator(s) are seeking anything of value that can be quickly turned into cash.  The criminals have avoided confrontations with the residents and in many cases have walked in through an open door while residents have been at work or school.

Residents are reminded to lock their doors when they are away and be watchful of cars that do not belong in an area.  If you see something suspicious, report it by calling the Rensselaer County Drug Tip Line at 518-270-0128 or 911 if the situation requires an immediate response.  Law enforcement will follow up on your call to the tip line.
